The Commission

The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) is the principal global policy-making body on gender equality at the United Nations.  The Commission prepares recommendations and reports on urgent problems and general issues of women's rights in political, economic, civil, social and educational fields.

Round table discussion on rural women (Canada)

Status of Women Minister Rona Ambrose held a round table session today, Feb. 27, with four Canadian delegates and two NGO representatives as part of their 56th session of the UNCSW. I was fortunate to be included. In my comments, I focused on violence against women and girls, and most specifically, rural females.

At 2:30 this afternoon, we had the most amazing experience of attending our first event at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.  In a room designed to seat about 60 people, over 100 crammed in to hear the panelists speak about “Empowering Women Politically to Eradicate Poverty”.  The event was hosted by the League of Women Voters.

Human Rights---Whose Definition?

On the first day of the UNCSW, I attended a Conversation Circle focusing on  “Human Rights ”which was hosted by the NGO Committee on the Status of Women.  The purpose of these conversation circles is to provide an opportunity for groups with common interests to network and to share ideas on how to work together in the future.
