Gender Equality---- Dream or Reality?

Several sisters from the Trade Union delegation at UNCSW 56 attended a session on Wednesday, February 29, sponsored by Norway, titled:  “Equality Between Men and Women---The Nordic Way”.  Michelle Bachelet, Director of UN Women, was one of the speakers, as well as representatives from each the 5 Nordic countries:  Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland.

At the Bejing Women's World Conference,  a target of 30 per cent of women in Public Administration was established. In the 17 years since that World Conference, the numbers have been slow to change and some governments have made concerted efforts to increase women's participation in Public Administration.

This session of approximately 90 attending was led by panelists describing their work and research from 8 selected countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa.  Action research was presented and developed through "Best Practices Foundation" and address issues such as gender equality, perceptions and experiences of corruption, and discrimination.

Economic Empowerment of Rural Women - Intervention on behalf of PSI, EI, ITUC and IUF

The offical UNCSW 56 panel focusing on the economic empowerment of rural women took place on 28 February. PSI Regional Secretary for Asia Pacific, Lakshmi Vaidhiyanathan, was selected to intervene on behalf of the labour delegation, from a long list of civil society organisations.
