Reflections from UNCSW Day 1: Gender Equality the Nordic Way

By: Beatrice Bruske, UFCW, Canadian Trade Union Delegation

I loved attending a session entitled "Gender Equality the Nordic Way" at the CSW61.  It so perfectly reiterated what unions know and lobby for;  strong social programs lead to an increase in labour market participation for women.  This leads to a growth in GDP and in turn provides funding for strong social programs.   We need a universal child care program, good funding for elder care, home care and healthcare in general.  We also need equal pay now, along with enhanced parental leave encouraging Dads to take time with their kids and share in the caring economy.  There was also a very interesting discussion on gender balanced boards of corporations and how that impacts policies.
