We, delegates to the 61st Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, hereby express our solidarity with Milagro Sala, arbitrarily incarcerated since January 2016 in Jujuy, Argentina, and also with the other prisoners Graciela López, Mirta Guerreros, Mirta Ayzama, Gladys Díaz, Alberto Cardozo and Javier Nievas, members of Tupac Amaru Organization, which is currently being harassed by the authorities in this province.
Milagro Sala is the main leader of the Tupac Amaru Organization. She was arrested on January 16th, 2016, when her organization was participating in a peaceful protest. The protesters called for negotiations and a process of dialogue with Governor Gerardo Morales, on guarantees for the continuity of cooperatives, which are central to productive and social organization in the province. The arbitrary detention of Milagro Sala is groundless and violates her parliamentary immunity as a member of the MERCOSUR Parliament.
Milagro Sala has been condemned in two judicial cases, both of which are based on false evidence and have been supported by Governor Morales. In both cases Milagro Sala has been condemned by sentences that not only describe social protest as a crime, but also prohibit her from being a member of any social organisation.
Milagro’s release has already been demanded by the Arbitrary Detention Committee of the UN, the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights, the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), and numerous organizations that defend human rights. The case is currently being reviewed by the National Supreme Court of Justice.
We demand that the Argentinian national authorities take all necessary action to secure the immediate release of Milagro Sala and all other political prisoners in the province of Jujuy!
