Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo from the Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), a PSI affiliate in Ghana participated in this event that brought together experts, researchers, and grassroots organizations to explore the intersection of climate and care, strengthen collaboration, and advance strategies for COP30 in Brazil.

GRNMA is advocating for the intersection of climate change and care by focusing on the health and safety of care workers in the health sector and the increasing burden of care resulting from climate-related health impacts in Ghana.

The union’s work to improve the working conditions of health and care workers, who are increasingly exposed to occupational hazards such as extreme weather, high temperatures, and environmental degradation, is done by conducting risk assessments, providing training, negotiating for improved conditions, and advocating for policy changes.

But also, GRNMA advocates for the capacity of health workers and the health system in Ghana to manage the growing demands of care caused by climate change, including the rise of vector-borne diseases, waterborne illnesses, and malnutrition.

The event provided a good exchange for:

✔ Learning from frontline organizations and grassroots movements

✔ Strengthening policy influence and advocacy towards COP30

✔ Co-creating a roadmap for a care-centered just transition
